Our Therapy Approach

Our Therapy Approach at Skills to Grow

At Skills to Grow, we take a child-centred and family-focused approach to therapy, ensuring that children feel supported, engaged, and empowered to reach their goals. We believe that therapy is most effective when it is tailored to each child's strengths and needs while involving their families in the process. Our structured approach ensures consistency, clear communication, and measurable progress over time.

To guide each child’s therapy journey, we follow a three-phase process:

🌱 Laying the Foundations (Planning & Assessment) Understanding your child's strengths, needs, and goals through initial assessment and goal-setting.

🌿 Nurturing Growth (Ongoing Therapy) – Engaging, tailored therapy sessions that build skills in a structured and supportive environment.

🌳 Celebrating Progress (Review & Adjustment) – Regular check-ins and formal reviews to track development, update goals, and ensure continued success.

Laying the Foundations: The First Steps

To provide the best support, we begin with a two-part initial assessment designed to gain a deep understanding of your child’s needs:

  1. Parent Consultation – A 30-minute phone call with parents before the first session allows us to gather important background information, discuss your concerns, and identify key areas for support. This step ensures that the in-clinic session is focused and productive.

  2. In-Clinic Session – A face-to-face session with both the child and their parents allows our therapists to observe the child’s skills in a natural setting, assess their strengths and challenges, and begin building a trusting relationship.

Following this, we develop a personalised goal and therapy plan based on your child's developmental needs, family priorities, and evidence-based best practices. Setting clear goals from the beginning ensures that therapy remains purposeful and progress can be measured effectively.

Nurturing Growth: Ongoing Therapy

We offer flexible therapy options to suit different needs, ensuring that children receive the right level of support to make meaningful progress.

  • Session Frequency – The frequency of therapy sessions varies depending on the child’s needs and goals. Some children benefit from weekly or fortnightly sessions, while others may require more intensive support or periodic check-ins. This is determined collaboratively with families during the goal-setting process.

  • Session Locations – Therapy sessions take place in our welcoming clinic, designed to support learning in a structured yet playful environment. In some cases, therapy may also occur in other settings, such as childcare centres, kindergartens, schools, or via teletherapy, depending on what is most beneficial for the child.

  • Therapy Approach – Our sessions are interactive and strengths-based, using play and evidence-based strategies to help children develop their skills. We work closely with families to ensure that therapy strategies can be carried over into everyday life, maximising progress beyond sessions.

Celebrating Progress: Review & Adjustment

Regular progress monitoring is key to ensuring that therapy remains effective and responsive to each child’s evolving needs. We provide structured check-ins and reports throughout the year:

  • Mid-Year Check-Ins – We schedule 30-minute phone calls with parents during the school holidays in Terms 2 and 4. These calls provide an opportunity to review progress, discuss any concerns, and adjust therapy strategies if needed.

  • Formal Reviews – In Terms 1 and 3, families receive a written therapy plan and progress report. These reports outline key achievements, update therapy goals, and provide recommendations for continued development.

By maintaining open communication and structured progress tracking, we ensure that every child’s therapy journey remains aligned with their needs and goals.

At Skills to Grow, we are committed to providing high-quality, individualised therapy that not only supports children in their development but also equips families with the knowledge and tools to continue progress at home.
